The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced federal tax relief for individuals and businesses in Hawaiʻi affected by severe storms, flooding, and mudslides. If you live or operate a business in an area covered by the federal disaster declaration, you may qualify for additional time to file certain federal tax returns and make tax payments without incurring penalties.
The relief applies automatically to eligible taxpayers located in FEMA-designated disaster areas. Depending on the specific disaster declaration, qualifying taxpayers may receive extended deadlines for individual income tax returns, business tax returns, estimated tax payments, payroll tax filings, and other time-sensitive tax obligations. If you've been affected by the storms, it's important to verify whether your county is included in the IRS disaster declaration and understand which filing deadlines have been postponed.
While the IRS automatically provides relief based on your address of record, taxpayers whose records are located in the disaster area—or who were otherwise affected but do not automatically receive relief—may still qualify by contacting the IRS. In addition, the Hawaiʻi Department of Taxation may offer separate state tax relief, so it's important to review both federal and state guidance before filing.
