HAWAII'S NEW GREEN FEE BEGINS IN 2026: WHAT VISITORS AND PROPERTY OWNERS NEED TO KNOW

May 30, 2025

Beginning January 1, 2026, Hawaiʻi will implement a new "Green Fee" designed to help fund environmental conservation, climate resilience, and the protection of the state's natural resources. The new fee is expected to generate funding for projects that preserve beaches, forests, coral reefs, and other public lands while supporting long-term sustainability initiatives across the islands.

The Green Fee will primarily affect visitors through an increase in the state's Transient Accommodations Tax (TAT) on short-term lodging, including hotels, vacation rentals, and other qualifying accommodations. Property owners who rent short-term accommodations should review the updated tax requirements to ensure they are collecting and remitting the appropriate taxes beginning in 2026.

For businesses in the hospitality industry, the new law may require updates to booking systems, pricing, and tax reporting procedures. Property owners and operators should also communicate any pricing changes clearly to guests to avoid confusion and ensure compliance with Hawaiʻi tax regulations.

At MAS CPA LLC, we encourage property owners, vacation rental operators, and hospitality businesses to stay informed about these changes and evaluate how they may impact tax reporting and business operations. Our team is available to help you understand your filing responsibilities and prepare for the new requirements before they take effect.
